BIO

Born into S.F. 60's subculture, and born onto a bone pile of 1906 quake survivors,

Beau Caughlan's roots grow deep in bay mud.

Artistic dreams of childhood were celebrated in a tribal family of artists, activists, and mystics. He was one of the early generation of children to attend the experimental Nueva School for the gifted, in Hillsborough Ca.

He was the class artist in Highschool, winning awards and scholarships. In Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, he spent his youth drawing and building gardens in the woods surrounding a 200-year-old log cabin farm. In California he played hippy; following the Grateful Dead and practicing Zen, and esoteric forms of Tibetan Buddhism.

Beau earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, with full tuition scholarships for his entry portfolio and for his work as student body president. A second BFA degree was earned from the University of San Francisco, where Beau studied the classical Jesuit curriculum of philosophies, ethics and theology.

For several years he lived in San Francisco, painting, illustrating, and working as project manager for the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology. While serving on Grace Cathedral's art commission, he began his studies of traditional icon painting and spirituality in the arts.

Beau also designed landscapes for over twenty years. His experiences included internships in France, at Monet’s Garden ‘Giverny’, and at the 11th century castle, ‘Chateau de Montreal’. Beau presented his work at public programs including events hosted by the Friends of the Vielles Maisons Francaises, the Strybing Arboretum and the De Young Museum.

Beau established his successful Art and Design studio, in Palm Springs, painting murals and commissions, as well as showing with galleries. During these years he traveled extensivley, studying old master works in the art capitols of Asia and Europe.

Beau attended Southern California's Claremont Graduate University, being awarded the Fellows’ grant for his entry portfolio. In 2005 he graduated Cum Laude, Master of Fine Arts, in painting.

Recovering from academia Beau lived in a forest hut on the edge of a mountain (with no bathroom or phone). Working at Northern Californian retreat centers, he studied contemporary and traditional Shamanism and Tantric practices, working with leading teachers in these disciplines.

Returning from ivory towers and deep dark woods, Beau’s art studio is now located in the Mission/SOMA arts district of San Francisco. Beginning to integrate his experiences, Beau is bringing his life researches into artistic form.

He is also very excited to be deeply engaged in celebration of his muddy roots.
